Things you can eat after orthognathic surgery liquid phase

Eating normally after any type of jaw surgery can be very painful and difficult. However, it is imperative that you try to eat healthy in order to recover from the surgery. For many, the first few weeks after orthognathic surgery will consist of a liquid diet through a straw or syringe. But once you are feeling a little better and more confident, you can start a soft food diet. Below is a list of foods I was able to eat when I came off of the liquid diet. But you should feel free with yourself to liquidise or blend anything if you do really crave a certain food.  I would suggest using a baby spoon if you have limited mouth opening or excessive swelling (like I did). I was unable to chew or use my jaw for a period of months and any soft food, if it needed to be broken down, had to be soft enough to crush using my tongue. Additionally, to ensure there is minimal mess, you may wish to put a towel around you (like a bib) and use a mirror so you can direct the spoon into your mouth. Finally, make sure you check the temperature of the food before you put it into your mouth. Good luck and I hope this list can inspire you.

  • Ovaltine or horrlicks
  • Tea and dunking biscuits like rich tea fingers (I avoided coffee as it stains your teeth)
  • Hot chocolate

  • Any mashed vegetables (swede, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potato, peas etc).
